Freedom in the Bible

This Saturday, July 4, our nation celebrates its freedom and independence.  The Bible has many references to freedom.  In this July 4th “quiz” see if you can name the freedom-related Biblical character or situation being described.  If you need help, check the Bible reference.  In the case of the prophetic books the help is not given because the answer is the same as the Biblical book.  The answers are at the end of this week’s Mid-Week bulletin.  Enjoy!

  1. Freedom was celebrated in a year-long observance to be observed every 50 years.  Slaves were set free and property was returned to family ownership.  Name this freedom year.  (Leviticus 25:10-11)

  1. In John 8:31-32 Jesus said we will be set free when we continue in His Word and know this word which Jesus also used to describe Himself.  What is this word?

  1. In order to free His people from Egyptian slavery God sent these events to show His power over the Egyptian “gods.”  Name these events.  (Exodus 11:1)

  1. Paul wrote thirteen New Testament books on a variety of subjects.  What was his great book on Christian freedom?

  1. When Jesus faced the governor, Pontius Pilate, this man ended up being freed instead of Jesus.  Name this man.  (Matthew 27:21)

  1. Even though his brothers sold him into slavery this man gave his brothers their freedom when they were reunited in Egypt.  Name this forgiving brother.  (Exodus 50:19-20)

  1. These people lost their freedom and were expelled from the Garden of Eden because God resolved to free them from their sins through His promised Messiah.  Name this couple.  (Genesis 3:21-24)

  1. In the last verses of the Bible this Greek word is used to pray that Jesus would return.  Give the Greek word or its equivalent.  (Revelation 22:20)

  1. This prophet freed a harlot and married her at God’s insistence; however, he found that he had to “free” her again and again as she resumed her harlotry.  Name this prophet.

  1. This prophet was trapped inside a whale or great fish and was freed by the grace of God following a prophetic prayer.  Name this reluctant prophet.

  1. When the church was praying for Peter to be freed from prison the congregation would not believe this woman’s report that Peter has been released.  Name this woman.  (Acts 12:12-17)

12. God’s people lost their freedom and independence and faced captivity by this nation as an object lesson for repentance.  Name this nation and captivity.  (II Kings 25)

This week’s article was written by our Senior Pastor, the Rev. Willis R. Schwichtenberg (Pastor Switz).

May Jesus Christ be praised!
