Why be a Christian? What an unusual, but important, question. It goes back to
the very fact of our existence. Once we know that we are alive and living we
come to realize that there is a reason why we were born and why we exist. In
addition, as we look around at this world, we come to see and to realize that
this world didn’t just "happen" as a quirk of time and space. There
must be something "behind" creation. We believe that this
"something" is God. The Bible says, "In the beginning, God
created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
Even as we come to know that there is a God, we come to realize that He is
the force behind creation and existence. At the same time, we quickly become
aware of the fact that there are also evil forces in the world. We usually call
those "forces" sin and we recognize the reality of sin and of death
and also of the existence of the devil, the leader behind everything evil. (I
John 3:8) Now, comes the amazing part. The Holy Bible reveals to us that God loved this
world that He created "so much" that He sent His one and only Son,
Jesus Christ, to "redeem" this world by overcoming sin through the
death of Jesus on the cross. (John 3:16) Christianity, becoming a Christian, is the step of faith which acknowledges
that we have sinned and have "fallen short" of what God wants to be
and that the only way that we can be saved and can have eternal life is by
believing that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior. (Acts 4:12) Why be a Christian? Because not being a Christian would suggest that
we think we can be saved and go to heaven by ourselves or by our good works.
This is a "dead end" because we can never know for sure if we have
been good enough. (Ephesians 2:8-9) The Bible also reveals to us that no one can
receive eternal life by his or her own merits or works. Therefore, throwing
ourselves on the mercy and grace of God is why and how we become a Christian. The Bible says (Acts 16:31), "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved." |
